What are some changes that you are going to make in your college life that will reduce your carbon footprint? In reality, the changes that you will need to make do not need to be drastic, but they are impactful. In this article, you will find some simple changes that you can make to your college life that will help the environment to thrive.
#1 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose, Repair
You have probably heard this before, but the importance of not adding more waste to the environment can not be overstated. Instead of getting rid of an old item, ask yourself, ‘can I reuse or repurpose this?’ Recycling is great, but reducing, repairing, reusing, and repurposing is even better. So much of our land and sea space is infested with trash, so when you do your part to reduce waste, you make the world more sustainable.
#2 Ditch the Plastic
We live in a world that is obsessed with plastic. It can be challenging to find containers and other everyday-use items that are not plastic, but try your best. When you choose containers, make sure that they are made of glass, wood, metal, or clay. Also when you go out to eat with your friends, try to bring a metal straw. Whenever you get take-out, bring a cup to get a drink, and also bring your container if they allow you to use it. When shopping, try to buy food items that are not wrapped in plastic, and bring your cloth bag to carry your items home.
#3 Use a Laptop or Tablet
Desktop computers use a huge amount of energy. Laptops use up to 90% less energy than desktops, so when you are writing your papers or doing research or homework online, use a laptop computer, and reduce the amount of energy that you are using.
#4 Do More Walking and Riding
There are some great off-campus apartments near slippery rock university. If you are living off-campus, then you may be tempted to drive to campus every day, but consider the environment before you make that move. Walking and riding a bike are great ways for you to enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise. When you leave your car at home, you are taking significant amounts of pollution out of the air, and you reduce your carbon footprint. Lastly, walking and riding are better for your wallet; you will spend less on a gym membership, and you will also save on gas.
#5 Turn Down the Heat
If you live in an area where the weather gets cold, avoid the temptation to turn the heat on high when you get cold. You do well to get a warm comforter and wear layers while you are at home. Turn down your thermostat a few degrees and you will not only save money, but you will also use less energy.
#6 Eat Less Animal Products
The production of meat and dairy products has taken a toll on the environment. Instead of buying beef, pork, fish, lamb, or pork, why not go vegetarian or even vegan for a few days a week? This does not have to equal huge changes in your life, but if you only left out meat and cheese for three days out of the week, you would lower your carbon footprint, and you may be surprised by how much better you feel. Meat is also expensive, so if you cut it out of your diet for a few days a week, you will also save money.
The World Is In Your Hands
We all have an obligation to our earth. Not only is this our home, but future generations will have to deal with the results of our bad decisions. You don’t have to be a superhero to save the environment, you just have to be more aware of the impact of your everyday decisions. Do something to make your future grandchildren proud.
